Celebrate Alpine Month in New Hampshire
Join AMC this June
At high elevations above treeline, communities of resilient shrubs, sedges, grasses, mosses, and lichens dominate. The plants in these alpine gardens are true tundra flora, similar to what you’d find in the Arctic Circle. Join us this June to celebrate Alpine Month and learn what makes these ecosystems so special—and what we’re doing to protect them from the destructive forces of climate change.

When you stay in AMC’s High Mountain Huts, you’ll enjoy evening naturalist presentations about alpine ecology steps away from the tundra gardens. At Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch, speakers from AMC’s Research Team will talk about the long-term data we’re studying from crowd-sourced community science participation on the evenings of June 15 and June 22. Learn how you can join AMC in protecting these beautiful and fragile ecosystems for future generations to experience.

Our Alpine Conservation Efforts
In AMC’s New Hampshire region, we are proud to join state and federal agencies in stewarding rare and fragile alpine ecosystems of the White Mountains.
Trailwork Above Treeline
AMC’s professional trail crew is uniquely trained and equipped to do trail work above treeline in the fragile alpine ecosystem. On the Franconia Ridge Loop Trail, AMC’s professional trail crew is two years into a five-year restoration project aimed at repairing worn and eroded sections of the trail, preparing the popular footpath for heavy usage and climate change effects for decades to come.
Alpine Stewards in Action
Alpine Stewards are AMC volunteers who spend their time above treeline on Mount Washington and the Franconia Ridge. These special places are both popular hiking destinations and fragile ecosystems. Alpine Stewards protect both by teaching Leave No Trace principles, monitoring rare alpine plants, and updating hikers on trail conditions. Be sure to say hello on your next hike! Want to get involved? Learn more about AMC's volunteer opportunities here.
