AMC Maine Woods, April 2024 – Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is thrilled to announce the expansion of its outdoor recreational offerings with the opening of 330 miles of gravel roads for mountain gravel cycling and bikepacking. To celebrate this milestone, adventurers will be able to plan their journeys with the help of the new 68-page Gravel Adventure Field Guide which features full-color maps, custom art, insightful stories, and much more.
“AMC connects people to the extraordinary landscapes in the Maine Woods through the careful balancing of outdoor recreation, habitat restoration, and responsible forestry. We are excited to provide access to these trails and inspire an unparalleled cycling experience for our community,” says Nicole Zussman, President and CEO of AMC.
Originating as former logging roads and access roads for sporting camps, the AMC Maine Woods’s gravel routes offer a leisurely and scenic way to explore the region’s rugged landscapes and flourishing wilderness. Families and cycling enthusiasts alike are encouraged to traverse the MWI gravel road network, creating unforgettable memories in the heart of nature.
To assist adventurers in navigating this vast network, AMC and the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation are delighted to introduce the Gravel Adventure Field Guide for the AMC Maine Woods. “Maine is a premier destination for the cycling community, and the opening of these gravel roads offers even more opportunities for adventure,” remarks Carolann Ouellette, Director of the Maine Office of Outdoor Recreation.
